The Rural Disadvantage: Growing Income Disparities Between Rural and Urban Areas

Income disparities have widened in recent years both between the rich and the poor and between wealthy and middle income Americans. With most wealthy Americans residing in urban areas — and rural areas accounting for large share of people with low incomes — these widening income disparities have been accompanied by a growing rural-urban income gap. Tax policy changes now under consideration that primarily would benefit upper income Americans would likely widen these gaps further.
